  1. 1880-1964. US general in World War II,
  2. commander of US forces in the Far East and,
  3. from Mar 1942, of the Allied forces in the SW
  4. Pacific. After the surrender of Japan he
  5. commanded the Allied occupation forces there.
  6. The son of an army officer, born in Arkansas,
  7. MacArthur became chief of staff 1930-35. He
  8. defended the Philippines against the Japanese
  9. 1941-42 and escaped to Australia. He was
  10. responsible for the reconquest of New Guinea
  11. 1942-45 and of the Philippines 1944-45, being
  12. appointed general of the army 1944. As
  13. commander of the UN forces in the Korean War,
  14. he invaded the North 1950 until beaten back
  15. by Chinese troops; his threats to bomb China
  16. were seen as liable to start World War III
  17. and he was removed from command by President
  18. Truman in Apr 1951, but received a hero's
  19. welcome on his return to the USA.
